On 9 March 2012, Mr Mustafa Al Bitar was travelling by taxi towards Al Waer neighbourhood in Homs when he was stopped at the checkpoint situated in Tripoli road, near Homs’ Education Directorate. A patrol of the Political Security, controlling the checkpoint, arrested him without providing any arrest warrant or any justification for the arrest. Some of the officers were wearing civilian clothes, some military uniforms. His friend, Abo Alnour Al Asaker, travelling with him, reported that during the arrest, Mr Mustafa Al Bitar was insulted and beaten.

The day of the arrest, he was allowed to call his family to inform them of his arrest by the Political Security forces. This was the last time Mr Mustafa Al Bitar could talk to his family.
